iPhone app: Jibbigo Speech Translator

iPhone app: Jibbigo Speech Translator

As a tot watching The Last Starfighter, I thought that the language translation contraption in the movie was way cool. When I was studying abroad in Latin America (and schlogging my way through Spanish), I really could’ve used something like that. Too bad Jibbigo didn’t exist back then. But it does today. The iPhone app costs a whopping $25, but judging from this demo, it looks like money well spent. Jibbigo translates English to...

Come Together: iPhone, Meet Sense UI

The ever-sharp Ross Miller over at Engadget Mobile found himself a video that's like the mobile phone version of Reese's Pieces: iPhone OS and HTC's Sense UI theme have come together like chocolate and peanut butter thanks to the Jailbroken awesomeness of Justflikwalk, a Redmond Pie deviantART member. No, you won't get all of Android + Sense's widget power on your iPhone just by installing the them, but you will get a nifty time/weather widget...

Mash-Up: Creating the ultimate FrankenPhone

Mash-Up: Creating the ultimate FrankenPhone

"That thing's going to Cricket" - Aaron Baker, News Editor FrankenPhone! It Lives! Wasn't it Mick Jagger who once crooned, "You can't always get what you want / But if you make a mash-up you kinda can?" Something like that, anyway. I'm tired of "close but no cigar" when it comes to mobile phones. iPhone's great except for that closed OS and no hard keyboard. Palm's WebOS is awesome but Palm can't seem to build a truly awesome piece of hardware...

App Store rejects Macworld iPhone Superguide (because the word “iPhone” is in the title?)

Macworld’s Editor-in-Chief Jason Snell has just been rebuffed by the App Store. According to his Twitter feed, Snell’s reference guide to the Apple handset has been rejected for — get this — actually having the word “iPhone” in the title. Was it to avoid confusion with Apple’s own onboard apps or other functions (none of which actually include the phone name)? Or was he just snubbed? After all,...
Top 5: Noahs Five Favorite iPhone Apps (October 09)

Top 5: Noah's Five Favorite iPhone Apps (October '09)

Apple's iPhone OS App Store has something like 100,000 apps. Many of them are junk. Here are five I've been using regularly for long enough now to call them my Fave Five. (Yes, I own an iPhone - I had to buy one to review it. No, it's not my only phone. Yes, I'm a fanboy. No, I'm not a fanboy.) 1. RunKeeper (Free) & RunKeeper Pro ($9.99) - Runkeeper.com RunKeeper Pro is my favorite iPhone app because it gets me off my duff, away from the...

Cute and Cheap: iBend launches Artist Series iPhone stands

Maybe it's because they're cute. Maybe it's because they're simple. Maybe it's because they're inexpensive and I'm tired of writing about $200 gadgets that come with $80/month contracts. Who knows why, but lately I've been fascinated with little doohickeys meant to prop up your phone or PMP in landscape mode so you can watch videos on them like the lazy fat cat you are. The latest in the craze comes from iBend, who just launched their Artist...

Musings from the Pound: Verizon's assault against Apple and AT&T

If you're in any way entrenched in the wireless industry, be it as a fan or writer, you've seen the Verizon Wireless commercials and campaign surrounding their coverage and the Motorola Droid.  Once known for the "Test Man," Verizon has moved on (albeit temporarily) to a more agressive approach.  Known for dry, relatively boring commercials, the new "Verizon vs. AT&T," and more recently, the "iDon't, but DroidDoes" campaign are...
iPhone game: Rock Band for iPhone

iPhone game: Rock Band for iPhone

If you’re a Rock Band virtuoso with an iPhone, you might be jazzed about Electronic Arts’ ambitious new app. While not a perfect game, Rock Band for iPhone does offer fans of the original the familiar graphics and popular rock songs they’d expect from the mobile version. As colored “notes” or rectangles zip down the screen in time to the music, players hit the corresponding colored inputs when they land at the...
iSells: Apple beats Q4 earnings estimates

iSells: Apple beats Q4 earnings estimates

Whether DroidDoes or iDon't, one things for sure: Apple's raking in the cash. Today's fiscal Q4 2009 conference call confirmed that the gang in Cupertino know how to sell gadgets, even in a recession. Apple netted a cool $1.67 billion of profit on just under $10 billion in revenue this quarter, good for a rise in profits of over one half a billion dollars as compared to Q3 of last year. A jump of half-a-billion, during a recession. Not...

Carrier Wars: Is Verizon barking up the wrong iTree with "iDon't" ads?

The gloves came off this past weekend. Verizon followed up their Anti-AT&T/Apple "There's a map for that" ads with the first of what promises to be a series of "iDon't" (but DroidDoes) ads touting the virtues of their forthcoming Android phone, thought to be called the Motorola Droid (pictured above). Smear campaigns make for good drama, but I'm not so sure that an Android-based device is quite ready for the weight of "iCan't"...

iPhone MMS on track for mid-day Friday launch; customers receiving notification

We just received word from AT&T that the iPhone MMS rollout is still on for "late morning" on Friday (or "afternoon," if you're on the East Coast).  Customers are beginning to receive SMS messages regarding the rollout, with the "view my message" MMS workaround apparently being turned off until the real deal hits on Friday.  It'll come in the form of an update, so be sure to dust off those USB cables in preparation of the big...

Zune, nano, and Courier: The ever-changing landscape of gadgets

(Microsoft Courier photos in this post via Gizmodo) This week I've been lucky enough to start some coverage of non-phone gadgets that readers have been asking me about: Microsoft's Zune HD and Apple's iPod nano 5G. While all of us at PhoneDog obviously stick to our core mission - phones - most of the time, the blurring of lines between "phones," "portable media players," "cameras," and the like makes it a natural fit for us to do some gadget...

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

In the end, you can do more, with more variety, on an Android Phone than you can on the iPhone. The iPhone is not a productive phone. BTW HELLO ITS A CELL PHONE!! IRS COVERAGE SUX!! WATS THE DAM POINT IN HAVING ALL THESE GREAT FEATURES IF UR NOT GETTING DAM SERVICE PPL AND THAT MY? FRIEND IS Y DROID IS BETTER IT DOESE EVERTHING IPHONE DOES BUT DOESNT 4 GETITS A CELLPHONE PPL WAKE THE FUK UP ppl its a CELL PHONE THE MAIN PURPOSE IT SERVES IS TO CALL AND IT DOESNT DO THAT WELL AT ALL WITH THAT LAME ASS EXCUSE FOR COVERAGE AT&T CLAIMS!!!!

Re: Mash-Up: Creating the ultimate FrankenPhone

give me the touch pro 2, but somehow make it thinner(without screwing up the keyboard), slap a capacitive screen on there! wifi, 5mp cam with duel LD flash and give it android 2.0/sense ui.... and multi touch!

and my carrier of choice would be.... SPRINT!

thats my dream phone!

Re: Mash-Up: Creating the ultimate FrankenPhone

I'll take 2.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

for me it comes to this...like noah said id all really depends what you want to use each device for. One thing i hate is messing around w the I phone, yeah a lot say its so easy to use. ok i like the way you can use your music and the way it organizes and sometimes using the web on it and other entertainment and some games. The G1 was the first android phone i got when it came out sad to say a certain someone thew it at a wall. so now im looking to get a new phone. I love android and the way it is used to communicate. I just like the over all lay out and how everything is so customizable. Hands down as a phone and over all day use also mail, texting, gps, and every other way to do what i like is android. what i would like is a plain i touch and thats really only for music. of course every now and then i would use its apps but all im interested is the music. Now its just a question what Android to get. I want the Droid maybe the Hero. Havent really checked out the cliq. the behold looks nice from the outside but but didnt like how they intergrated behold and android. honestly for me personally it sucks! Android rocks! !!

Re: Mash-Up: Creating the ultimate FrankenPhone

In terms of hardware, the HD2 is an amazing piece of kit. Windows Mobile 6.5 however, is not because you still need that stupid stylus to dig deeper into the OS.

Hopefully Windows Mobile 7 to be released in March will be the saving grace and finally do away with that stupid stylus because otherwise it would be a great OS with a heap of features and existing software.

I was considering selling my iPhone in anticipation of the SE X10 but now I'm glad I didn't after seeing the UI, and I think I'll wait again until I've seen WinMo 7 in action.

Re: Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

just a suggest a keyboard upgrade. It makes the sarcasm more obvious.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

First of all I love my iPhone. With that said, my friend recently bought the droid and I love that phone as well. Noah delivered this review quite well. It's really a personal choice between the two phones. Plus where i live AT&T just sucks.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

I should have known better. Noah, please stop doing DogFights with any iPhone. You will never get over your love for it, it's obvious. Thus, PLEASE do something like the Droid vs. New WinMo phone, or various Android phones. Just understand that it's pointless to ask your opinion if an iPhone is involved.
